About & Challenges

GUTSY!  is a bold personal care products brand that doesn’t follow the standards. They don’t half-ass using bottles made of “bioplastics” that decompose for decades, rather, they buy earth-friendly bamboo packaging and shipping boxes, along with the bamboo packaging tape from the USA Deep South region. They vet all manufacturers and farms to make sure that they use non-invasive bamboo species and well-paid laborers.

GUTSY! wanted us to use bold typography so that they can emphasize the brave approach and what they are all about. We wanted to showcase the bamboo usage as well, but in a different way than generic bamboo/leaves background, so that we can distinguish them from the other brands. That presented another challenge. Their idea was to use audacious and earthy colors that suit well along with the materials, so we had to keep that in mind while crafting the packaging.

The Output & Impact

We ended up with a bold (courageous as they are) wordmark combined with the bamboo implemented as ! symbol. That being said, the focus was still more on the bold and visible typography for their product names. Besides that, we created a complementary set of icons to showcase their values and standards. The main color scheme is set of purples + bright palette of various pastel colors for each ingredients.

Also, bamboo may be the main ingredient in the packaging and shipping materials, but it has symbolic value as well.

  • Bamboo represents mission, boldness, strength, and ambition because it:
  • Grows at an aggressive rate
  • Releases 35% more oxygen into the atmosphere than similar biomass of trees
  • Regrows in a few months while trees take decades to mature
  • And it does all this while requiring far less water than trees and other sustainable crops.
  • Did we mention that we printed everything with soy-based inks?

Gutsy! told us that their website’s bounce rate suddenly dropped to 30% of what it was before the branding changes. Traffic to their educational blog pages has increased by 22% as well. They want to be sure that readers and viewers can’t help but become bold warriors for Mother Earth.

Because of the branding changes, people are taking them more seriously and consuming more content. It’s too early to tell, but the new dynamic appears to be boosting sales as well.
